What Exactly Are Heritage Windows?

Heritage windows get their name because their design is realised by employing traditional crafting methods and due to them sharing many of the characteristics of windows of the past.

They’re so historically accurate, which makes them a standout window solution for anyone looking to sympathetically upgrade the windows of a late 19th or early 20th century property, one that’s perhaps either certified as a listed building or located in a conservation area.

Planners are very particular about what type of replacement windows can be integrated into properties with a special architectural or historic interest, but heritage windows often comply with the stringent guidelines in place.

Classic styling for the 21st century

Heritage windows have a distinct correlation with traditional timber windows as their proportions are very similar and heritage designs feature an authentic wood effect finish. However, heritage windows eclipse them for practicality and their all-round performance is far greater.

Wooden windows are prone to weakening as they age, which leads to draughts occurring, and once they reach that stage, it’s very hard to restore them back to near-peak condition.

A heritage window retains its resilience throughout its life, with virtually no maintenance necessary, using a UPVC or aluminium frame and coming double or triple glazed.

Types of heritage windows

The best-selling heritage window style is the flush sash window, a design that’s characterised by its sashes finishing flush with the external face of the product.

Other designs also fall into the heritage window bracket though, cottage windows being one of them. Possessing Georgian bars, they offer a classic cottage aesthetic.

These Georgian bars create a grid-like formation, either vertically or horizontally, making it almost look as though a cottage window contains small individual glass panes when it’s actually just a single pane.

Rising in popularity

There’s been a noticeable growth of interest in heritage windows in recent years – more and more homes in the Kent area are being fitted out with them, which you will observe when travelling around local neighbourhoods.

But it’s not just in older homes that they have a presence. No, many contemporary buildings also have the latest heritage window designs to give them a distinguished look, such as faultlessly imitated flush windows or cottage windows.
